As part of Summit Design and Engineering Services’ team, Alpha & Omega Group performed hydraulic engineering and structural engineering services for the Town of Hillsborough’s Riverwalk Phase II Greenway. The project included four crossings of the FEMA-regulated Eno River. A HEC-RAS hydraulic model was developed for the project and a CLOMR was required to account for increases in the 100-year water surface elevations.

The structural engineering services required conceptual design of the four bridges, design of three bridge/boardwalk crossings; development of construction documents; engineer’s opinion of probable construction cost for the four bridges and boardwalks; and assisting with construction administration.

A&O assisted Summit with public engagement for the project. Prior to the public engagement meeting, A&O met with Classic American Homes Preservation Trust (CAHPT), a financial contributor to two of the four bridge crossings required, to help determine the types of bridges needed to connect two historical properties: Ayr Mount, a Federal-era plantation house and the historic Occoneechee Speedway, owned by CAHPT.

A&O’s design for a top-down construction method reduced impact to the environment and reduced construction time by 30 days, saving the Town of Hillsborough money. The Riverwalk Greenway received the 2015 Grand Award for Engineering Excellence from the American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina. Ω
